It is a procedure that treats abnormal blood vessels by injecting a liquid that causes the vessels to scar and break down. It’s used to treat a variety of conditions, including: Varicose veins, Spider veins, Haemorrhoids, Vascular tumours and Lymphatic system malformations.
During the procedure, a doctor injects a sclerosant, usually a concentrated salt water solution, into the vein using a fine needle. The sclerosant irritates the vein walls, causing them to swell and stick together, which stops blood flow. The vein then fades within a few weeks.
