Radiotherapy
Marcelle Ruth Cancer Centre and Specialist Hospital
Plot 1192D Olubosi Close, Off Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Radiotherapy uses radiation to treat cancer, either from outside or inside the body. The state-of-the-art radiotherapy centre is equipped with a linear accelerator (LINAC) – an advanced machine that allows the targeting of tumours with precision in virtually any area of the body.
With high-energy x-rays, radiotherapy destroys cancer cells to shrink a tumour or slow its growth, typically over days or weeks. The LINAC shapes the x-rays to match the shape of a tumour, so that it treats all of the cancer and only a small area around it. As a result, it minimises damage to healthy cells.
At Marcelle Ruth, radiotherapy treatment is prescribed by a consultant oncologist and delivered in a dedicated room called a “bunker”, which is designed to ensure safety of both patients and staff. Treatment is delivered by a highly skilled team of doctors, physicists, therapists and nurses.
