Cataracts are not a disease. Many people think that cataracts are something we “catch”. Behind the colored part of the eye (the iris) is a lens. This lens is what focuses light on the retina (in the back of the eye). When that lens becomes cloudy (somewhat like a dirty window) it becomes difficult to see through it and this is a cataract. This clouding can be related to aging changes, use of certain medications, and cumulative exposure to ultraviolet light
