What is CT scan?
Computed tomography scan also known as CT scan is an imaging procedure that uses x-ray and computer technology to produce detailed images of structures and tissues within the body, beyond what standard x-ray can provide.
CT scans capture multidimensional images of the target region of the body which is combined by the computer to provide very detailed 2D or 3D images.
Uses of CT scan
CT scan is used to closely examine bones, organs, and other soft tissues, as well as blood vessels and suspicious growths. CT scans aid doctors in the diagnosis and monitoring of many kinds of injuries, disorders, and diseases. The following are some of the conditions that CT scan can detect:
- Internal injuries due to accidents or other types of trauma.
- Certain types of cancer and benign (noncancerous) tumors.
- Fractures (broken bones).
- Muscle injuries.
- Brain diseases, heart disease, lungs disease, liver masses, bowel blockages, and other organ abnormalities.
- Blood clots and bleeding vessels.
- It is also used to monitor treatment progression especially cancer treatment, etc.
CT scan of the abdomen or pelvis is not often recommended for pregnant women due to safety issues.

Use of contrast medium for CT scan
CT scan can be done with or without administering a contrast medium to the patient. Most CT contrast media are given orally, intravenously, intrarectally, or more than one way depending on the examination required and the physician’s indication. These contrast media allow for better visualization of certain target areas such as the brain, kidney, liver, blood vessels, GIT, etc. as the contrast make them standout from other surrounding structures.
Intravenous contrast is often give immediately before the scan is done. Oral contrast is usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before the scan is done allowing for time of circulation.
Patients with certain degrees of with renal (kidney) impairments are not allowed to take contrast medium. Patients must report any kidney impairment to the attending physician or radiologist to determine if contrast medium can be administered.
Some persons may be allergic to the contrast medium. Previous experience of allergy should be reported to the requesting physician or radiologist. Those who have known mild allergic reaction to contrast medium are often pre-treated with anti-allergic medications. People with severe allergy to the medium will often do the scan without the medium. These medications are kept on standby in the case of any first time experience of allergic reaction.
Persons who are to use contrast medium are not to eat for at least 3 hours before the examination. Rectal contrast administration requires further evacuation of the rectum. Diabetic persons are allowed to eat light meals and clear fluids 3 hours before the scan. Speak with your healthcare provider to receive adequate instructions especially if you are taking any medications.
How a CT scan is done
The patient may be made to change into a hospital gown before laying still on the scanner bed, following the instructions of the radiographer. If a contrast medium is to be administered, the contrast procedure is then performed.
The bed is gently rolled into the doughnut shaped scanning machine by the radiographer from an adjoining room. The radiographer will communicate with the patient either through a microphone or communication system across the room. It is best to lay still and follow instructions in order to obtain the best images.
