Bone Mineral Densitometry

Bone mineral densitometry (BMD) is a simple and painless procedure used to detect osteoporosis. It allows your physician to assess the strength (or density) of your bones, to estimate your risk of fracture and to determine your response to treatment.

BMD uses a very low dose of radiation (about one quarter the amount required for a chest x-ray) to identify and quantify the strength of your bones. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes in its entirety and no special preparations are required.
